Tips on Arranging Your Bedroom Furniture

Image

Creating a relaxing and comfortable space in your bedroom is vital for maintaining your well-being and getting a good night's sleep. Here are some tips if you’re struggling to work out the best way to arrange your bedroom furniture.

Your bed

Your bed is probably the largest piece of furniture in your bedroom; it's also the most important piece of furniture. Getting the placement of your bed right is the starting point for a well-organised bedroom. Almost all bedrooms have at least one wall without windows or doors; this wall makes a great place for your bed. You’ll have plenty of space on either side of the bed for bedside cabinets and space around the edges of the room for your wardrobe and other storage units. If you have the choice of walls, pick the one that’s opposite the door so the bed will be the main focal point when you enter the bedroom. Avoid placing your bed directly next to or below any windows where possible; noise or drafts could impact your sleep. If you sleep alone in the bed, you could place one side against a wall to maximise your space; this isn’t recommended if you share a bed, as it can be awkward for the person against the wall to get up without disturbing their partner.

Wardrobe

Your wardrobes are likely to be another large item you need to fit into your bedroom. Although if you’re limited in space in the room and have a spare bedroom, you could use this space for storing your clothes. You don’t necessarily need all of your clothing items in the same room where you sleep. If you choose to place a wardrobe in your bedroom, opt for a space where you can easily open all the doors, and nothing is blocking them. The corner of the room tends to be a good choice. Bedroom furniture shouldn’t block natural light, so avoid putting furniture in front of a window. Fitted wardrobes are a good option to maximise your space if you’re planning to stay in your home for several years.

Chest of drawers

A chest of drawers is another large bedroom furniture item that you should position before smaller items. Having a chest of drawers opposite your bed is a good location as long as you have room to access them and walk past them. A chest of drawers can double as a TV stand if you enjoy watching TV in bed. Placing them opposite the bed will give you the best view of the TV. If you’re tight on space, you can also sit on the end of the bed to access the drawers.

Bedside tables

Your bedside tables should be placed next to each side of the bed to make it easy to store essential items such as a glass of water, medication and a lamp for light. Before buying bedside tables, consider the amount of space you have on each side. Small bedside tables in a large room can look lost and be impractical. At the same time, large bedside tables might not fit in a small bedroom. Try to keep as little as possible out on your bedside tables to prevent your bedroom from looking cluttered. A bedside table with a drawer is a good option for those that need additional storage space for personal items.

Decoration and accessories

When decorating your bedroom, stick to a colour palette that’s neutral and calming if you want to promote a good night's sleep. Choose artwork and paintings that help you to feel relaxed and happy. Bright, bold colours may look great but can make it more challenging to switch off and get a restful night's sleep. A few plants in your bedroom can also help to create a relaxing environment that promotes sleep and serenity.

When it comes to arranging your bedroom furniture, every room will be different; you may need additional furniture that’s not mentioned on this list. Start with placing the largest and most important objects first, then fit everything else in the remaining space. Don’t be afraid to use other spaces in your home to store clothing. This can help to free up space in your bedroom, making it feel less cluttered and promoting sleep.
